What I was longing to capture in this painting was a reminder of our relationship with God. We may feel sufficient and able on our own, but in reality we are just motionless sailboats. To move we need something we can't make on our own. We need something we can't even see... we need the WIND.
In John there is this beautiful conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus. Jesus is explaining what it means to be born again. He uses the imagery of the wind to help him understand how God moves.
Jesus’ idea to Nicodemus was “The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” (John 3:8)
First God moves upon us. Capturing our hearts and consecrating our souls and then His Spirit (the Wind of God) moves us as we journey through this life. For the control freaks this is SCARY, but when I lay down my desire to be in charge, oh the FREEDOM this brings! Nothing is on my shoulders. I don't have to make this or that happen, I can just allow Him to move me, guide me, lead me. And what a wild journey it can be, right? Sometimes His Wind carries us into the calmest waters, experiencing the most beautiful skies, partaking the greatest of joys this world has to offer. Other times His Wind carries us right into storms, into deep waters, into opposing winds. But even still we can trust where He leads us.
Wherever His Wind takes you... don't fear, He is a with God. He will never lead you anywhere He isn't. Raise up your sail, trust God's Wind in your sails and see all the places He longs to take you.
"The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” (John 3:8)
